Course Information
Description Survey course introducing chemistry. Topics may include inorganic, organic, biochemistry, food/physiological chemistry, and environmental/consumer chemistry. Designed for non-science and allied health students.
Required Textbooks Textbook Purchasing Statement: A student attending Lamar State College Port Arthur is not under any obligation to purchase a textbook from the college-affiliated bookstore. The same textbook may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer.

A copy of the Lab Manual will be provided.
Additional Materials/Resources Students may wish to purchase a personal pair of ANSI 87 glasses instead of using the shared goggles.

Learning Outcomes 1. Use basic apparatus and apply experimental methodologies used in the chemistry laboratory.
2. Demonstrate safe and proper handling of laboratory equipment and chemicals.
3. Conduct basic laboratory experiments with proper laboratory techniques.
4. Make careful and accurate experimental observations. Relate physical observations and measurements to theoretical principles.
5. Interpret laboratory results and experimental data, and reach logical conclusions.
6. Record experimental work completely and accurately in laboratory notebooks and communicate experimental results clearly in written reports.
7. Design fundamental experiments involving principles of chemistry.
8. Identify appropriate sources of information for conducting laboratory experiments involving principles of chemistry.

Instructor Policies
  1. Any graded work that is not submitted by the due date will NOT be accepted and will result in a zero, with the exception of extenuating circumstances including medical, family, automobile and technology issues. Other circumstances will be considered at the discretion of the instructor. All circumstances will require valid documentation of the issue.
  2. Technology issues require a screen shot or picture of the screen taken and sent via email immediately so the issue can be resolved.
  3. All assignments must be turned in through Blackboard (BB) in the designated location. Work sent via email will not be accepted unless there is an extenuating circumstance.
  4. Any graded work may only be submitted once regardless of the due date. Only this first submission will be graded.
  5. Academic honesty is required and any student found in violation of this policy will not be tolerated. All suspected instances will mandate a review of all completed work in the course.
  6. Violation of safety rules will result in a point deduction for the experiment conducted on that day.
  7. Failure to follow specific instructions will results in a point deduction for the experiment conducted on that day.

Attendance Policy Any student who arrives more than 10 minutes late will not be allowed to participate in the lab scheduled for that day.
Presence is required. Missing more than 2 Labs for any reason will result in a failing grade in the course.

COVID 19 Information The Lamar State College Port Arthur (LSCPA) Student Code of Conduct COVID 19 Policy requires students who have been diagnosed with COVID 19 to report their condition directly to their local health department. Students should also contact their course faculty to report their quarantine status. In addition, this policy requires all students to wear face coverings when directly exposed to COVID 19 in compliance with the criteria included in the policy. Facility Policies No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.
